Case Study

Energy Demand in India

India is one of the biggest countries in the world and second in population count after China. Its population is still growing and energy consumption is rapidly increasing day after day. The country is facing some very huge issues concerning its ability to provide energy for its people, both renewable and non-renewable.

The increase in demand of energy is the natural effect of an increasing population in the highly populated country; the population just keeps increasing and in 2012 there were more than 1.2 billion Indians; another factor is the increase in living standards in India. The people have a demand to use energy like the electricity and petrol for their daily lives and the industrial section is on high demand for energy to run their big machines and produce more.

The Indian government tried different methods to control the population; one of the methods was the education of the Indian public; it’s proven that education helps in planning a family and today most educated people have planned their children to no more than 3. On the other hand, uneducated people don’t have any family planning and usually a couple has more than 5 kids. To have birth control some policies can be added like taxing couples with more than 2 children, having an age limit for marriage, educating people more on environmental responsibility, especially in rural areas.

India is one of the nations that has a very high potential when it comes to developing and daily production; it is a very self-dependent country; the large population can also mean that there would be more skilled personnel, and a lot of people to work; the manufacturing industry has boomed because of these factors and energy demand has increased. A proper reaction is needed to reduce the booming industry; the skilled workers and labour workers are needed in some countries to fulfil their needs of working brains and hands. This solution actually may lead to the downfall of the manufacturing industry.

Nowadays the development of renewable energies is becoming more noticed worldwide and is being used in some developed countries like Germany and the U.K. The Indian government can go in that direction to produce energy, although India depends on hydroelectricity while other nature-based potentials are ignored like the solar, wind and the tidal waves. For India, it is important to tap into these natural activitiesto fulfil its desire and needs for energy; a combination of renewable and non-renewable energies would prove to be very effective since the non-renewable energy has not reached the level where it can be as reliable in providing power as well as the non-renewable sources; the renewable can be used especially in rural areas and in urban areas too but
if it fails because of the weather then the non-renewable energy will work as the secondary power.

In India the number of people is becoming an issue and the government wants it to decrease but since the government has no way to govern the rural areas its policies will not budge; the proper solution to energy demand is to look for other energy sources in its own borders and surely India has given birth to scientists to lead the way for the alternative energy to be the main solution.
